High-Fashion Lamps to Get a Low-Budget Price

Armed with some creative advice from lighting experts, a budget-minded bathroom makeover need not leave you in the dark.

Just by swapping out old light fixtures for decorative new sconces and a dramatic chandelier, and adding some accent lighting, you can update the personality, not to mention the functionality, of your bath. And with prices for high-fashion light fixtures starting at around $50, you can do it all on a modest budget. Now that's a bright idea.

CHANDELIER CHIC
"One of the hottest design trends we are seeing at Lowe's is placing chandeliers in the bathroom," says Wilson. Typically smaller and more delicate than those used elsewhere in the home, bath chandeliers can transform the look of a room while providing elegant, soft overhead illumination.

When combined with task and accent lighting, an appropriately sized chandelier will help create a "layered" lighting effect in the bath. In addition to suitable size — a chandelier must be hung above head-height — homeowners will want to select a style and finish that complements the style of the room. Wrought-iron is the natural choice for traditionally styled baths, while Tiffany-inspired models may better suit an Arts and Crafts bungalow.

According to Wilson, Lowe's carries a wide array of affordable, fashionable chandeliers. The delicately styled and ultra-popular Portfolio chandelier features three faux candles, crystal pendants and chains. It retails for just $45.

THE TASK AT HAND
If your bathroom doesn't already have them, Linda Whitcomb, owner of Village Kitchen & Bath in Hyannis, Mass., recommends installing a pair of wall sconces on either side of the bathroom mirror. Not only do sconces eliminate unwanted shadows cast on the face from overhead lighting, they provide another opportunity to dress up the bath.

"Beautiful sconces can add that decorative high-fashion look to the bathroom for not a lot of money," Whitcomb says. And they are much more attractive than the traditional three- and four-bulb chrome boxes mounted above the mirror.

Whitcomb is seeing a trend toward clean lines and graceful curves, but also notes that shabby chic is still alive and well when it comes to sconces. "Sconces with flowers and jewels and colored doodads are very popular," she says.

Whitcomb finds that World Imports Decorative Lighting has a wonderful collection of affordable sconces, some costing as little as $70 each.

ACCENT ON DRAMA
"Properly placed accent lighting can produce a tremendous amount of excitement in the bathroom," says Dan Grahl, owner of Naples Kitchen and Bath in Naples, Fla. Placed under vanities, above cabinets, even mounted beneath a translucent countertop, accent lighting introduces warmth and drama to a room. It can also make a small room appear larger.

Grahl prefers low-voltage, high-intensity xenon accent lighting to illuminate crown molding, down-light a sink or vanity, or add gentle illumination from beneath translucent countertops, such as glass, resin or stone. Xenon bulbs provide a clean, crisp white light while giving off less heat than halogen bulbs.

Companies such as Juno Lighting, available through numerous online retailers, offer slim, low-profile models that can be hidden above or below cabinets and either hardwired or plugged into a wall outlet. Prices run about $50 for a standard nine-inch-long unit.

DIMMERS, BULBS AND CANDLES — OH MY!
"The bathroom is and always has been a retreat," says Jennifer Wilson of Lowe's. One of the easiest ways to create that cherished spa-like atmosphere, she says, is to connect a dimmer switch to the bathroom light fixtures.

Dimmers allow the homeowner to enhance the bathroom's brightness in the morning when getting ready, and then decrease it later in the evening, perhaps while soaking in the tub. "Dimmers really do create a relaxing mood," Wilson says. And installing one is a snap.

In that same vein, replacing harsh white lights or unflattering fluorescents with warm-tone bulbs such as Sylvania's soft pink light bulbs will bring a warm, cozy feel to the bath. The slightly pink color tone is very complementary on skin, making it appear more natural.

"People often overlook candles as a great way of adding personality to the bath for minimal cost," adds Wilson. Companies like Bath and Body Works offer a wide range of candles that are made for the bath. Placed around the room, lighted candles bring a sense of calm and serenity in ways other lights can't. Use candles of varied heights and shapes for added effect. For safety's sake, keep candles a safe distance from flammable items.

Christmas Activities Start Today

SMYRNA — Over the next six days, Cobb will kick off the holiday season with Christmas tree–lighting ceremonies around the county.

Smyrna is the first to light its tree, with an event scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Village Green outside the Smyrna Community Center, 200 Village Green Circle, off Atlanta Road SE. The tree is scheduled to be lit at 7 p.m.

Despite calls for rain and snow today and a high of 40 degrees, Patty Wilson, senior recreation coordinator for Smyrna’s parks department, said the city is planning to go ahead with the event.

“If it’s just sprinkling and misting, we’ll still have the tree lighting outside,” Wilson said.

Even in the case of heavy rain, Wilson said the event would continue indoors. Several local school chorus and orchestra groups will perform inside the community center. In addition, a Holiday Bazaar will feature arts and crafts, while children can visit with Santa Claus.

Santa will take a break from tree lightings on Wednesday, but they pick back up Thursday in Marietta. Events start at 5 p.m. at Glover Park on Marietta Square. Santa will arrive at 5:20 p.m., with the tree lighting scheduled for 6 p.m.

Santa will continue to visit children in the gazebo until 8 p.m.

If you miss Santa on Thursday, you can continue to catch him at his workshop on the Square on weekends up until Christmas.

Other tree-lighting ceremonies include:

* The Vinings Jubilee Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at 4300 Paces Ferry Road, just off Paces Mill Road. The event, which has taken place for more than 40 years, will include train and pony rides, face painting, balloon twisting, festive music and holiday treats.

* Acworth will have a tree lighting 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Depot in Downtown Acworth. The event features a number of performances, including Mayor Tommy Allegood reading “’Twas the Night before Christmas.” Children can get their picture taken with Santa starting at 6:45, but can start scheduling pictures at 5:15 p.m.

* Austell’s annual tree lighting starts at 6 p.m. Friday at Collar Park, 2625 Joe Jerkins Blvd, off Veterans Memorial Highway SW. It will feature school choirs along with free hot dogs, hot chocolate and pastries. Santa will arrive to the event on his sleigh.

* The Mable House Christmas events start Friday. The Mable House Arts Center, 5239 Floyd Road SW in Mableton, near the intersection with Clay Road, will feature the Christmas House Arts and Crafts Show from Friday until Dec. 11. Art from exhibitors from around the Southeast will be for sale. The house also hosts Mable’s Tea Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Friday until Dec. 10. The Mommy and Me Tea will be Sunday.

* Kennesaw’s Christmas events start at 1 p.m. Saturday with a parade that starts near the intersection of Park Drive and Main Street. It will march past Cherokee Street toward Sardis Street. The tree lighting program begins at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Depot. The event will feature visits with Santa, a petting zoo and pony rides, vendors, and inflatable attractions and games. New this year is a snow playground, which will cost $2.

* Powder Springs will light its Christmas tree at an event that runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Historic Town Square, 4488 Pineview Drive, off Old Lost Mountain Road. Along with live entertainment, the event will include a “festival of trees,” free carriage rides, photos with Santa and free hot chocolate.

* WellStar Kennestone Hospital will light its tree at 5 p.m. Sunday on the top of its cancer center parking deck on Tower Road, off Church Street. Visitors are advised to park in the blue parking deck.

How Much Air Flow Must I Need for The house? A Matter Coming from Marriage Area

By now you’ve probably heard how important it is to have good ventilation in your Union City home. Especially if your home was built in the 1980s or early 1990s when ventilation issues were prevalent, you may not have enough clean air moving through your home. But, how much ventilation do you need? What is enough and if you don’t have it, how do you ensure your home is retrofitted properly?

How Much Ventilation?
Most recommendations for ventilation come from the Home Ventilation Institute, which provides a series of standards of measurement for builders and contractors retrofitting homes for better ventilation. Here are some of their recommendations and how they might apply for your home:

Bathroom – Small bathrooms (less than 100 sq. ft) need 1 CFM per square foot of bathroom. The number goes up for each fixture if you have a large bathroom.
Kitchens – Your kitchen range needs at least 100 CFM if against the wall and upwards of 150 CFM if on an island.
Ventilators – If you have an HRV for your home, you should have at least 100 CFM for 2,000 square feet and another 50 for every 1,000 square feet of home size being ventilated.
Home Ventilators – The actual volume of CFM for ventilators depends on the type of ventilator being used. For example, a whole house ventilator needs upwards of 6,000 CFM for a 2,000 square foot home. Attic ventilators need 1,400 or more.
So, what does this mean for your home? It means in general that you need a lot of ventilation and that the best way to get it is through mechanical ventilation techniques combined with your air handler and ductwork.

Especially if you recently added insulation and weather proofing to your home but have not yet updated your ventilation, you might have a major air quality problem, so have a professional measure your home’s air flow as soon as possible.
